My Specialisation

1. What I study

  • I study at the Secondary Industrial School in Liberec (SPŠ Liberec, "Průmyslovka").
  • My field is Information Technology (Informační technologie).
  • The course is 4 years long and ends with the maturita (state graduation exam).
  • After graduation I receive a vysvědčení o maturitní zkoušce + can continue at university or start working in IT.

2. Why I chose this field

  • I’m interested in computers, software and technology since childhood.
  • IT is a fast-growing field with lots of job opportunities and decent salaries.
  • It allows me to be creative (programming, design) and logical (problem solving) at the same time.
  • I can work from almost anywhere – many IT jobs offer remote / hybrid work.

3. Main subjects

  • Programming – algorithms, data structures, OOP; languages like Python, Java, C#, JavaScript.
  • Web development – HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, Node.js, databases.
  • Computer networks – TCP/IP, routing, switching, Wi-Fi, security, Cisco basics.
  • Databases – SQL, design, normalisation.
  • Electrical circuits and electronics – Ohm’s law, components, circuits, soldering.
  • Operating systems and hardware – Windows, Linux, troubleshooting, assembly of PCs.
  • Automation and robotics – PLC, microcontrollers (Arduino, Raspberry Pi), sensors and actuators.
  • Computer graphics – raster vs. vector, Photoshop, Illustrator, video editing.
  • Measurement and metrology – measuring instruments, errors, sensors.
  • Safety and reliability – data security, backups, error handling.

4. Skills I have learned

  • Programming in several languages.
  • Working with databases (designing, querying with SQL).
  • Networking basics – configuring routers, setting up Wi-Fi, basic security.
  • Hardware – assembling and repairing a PC, replacing components.
  • Web development – making functional websites from scratch.
  • Working in a team on projects with deadlines.
  • Documentation and technical writing in Czech and English.

5. Tools and software I use

  • Editors / IDEs: VS Code, IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm.
  • Version control: Git, GitHub, GitLab.
  • OS: Windows, macOS, Linux (mostly Ubuntu).
  • Office: Microsoft 365, Google Workspace.
  • Communication: Discord, MS Teams, Slack.
  • Design: Figma, Adobe Photoshop, Inkscape.

6. Projects I have worked on

  • (Personalise this with your real projects.)
  • A simple website / web app built in HTML + CSS + JS or React.
  • A small database project with SQL.
  • An Arduino / Raspberry Pi project (e.g. weather station, smart light, line-following robot).
  • A game or small application in Python / C#.
  • A graduation project (maturitní projekt) in 4th year.

7. My maturita exam (profile part)

  • Czech language and English (state part).
  • Profile subjects from IT field – examples:
    • Programming (theoretical + practical).
    • Computer networks.
    • Web development.
    • Practical maturita project with documentation and oral defence.

8. What I want to do after school

  • Option A – University: TUL (Liberec), ČVUT (Prague), MUNI / VUT (Brno), VŠE for economics+IT.
  • Option B – Work straight away: as a junior developer / IT support / sysadmin / web designer.
  • Option C – Gap year: travel, language course, internship abroad.
  • Long term: become a software developer / IT specialist / freelancer / start my own company.

9. The future of IT (and why it matters)

  • AI is changing every industry – programmers will work with AI rather than against it.
  • Cybersecurity is in huge demand.
  • Cloud computing, DevOps, data engineering are growing.
  • Robotics, automation, electric vehicles, IoT offer new career paths.
  • Lifelong self-learning is essential – IT changes every few years.

10. Useful phrases

  • My specialisation is information technology.
  • I’m especially interested in… (programming / networks / robotics).
  • My favourite subject is… because…
  • After the maturita I plan to…
  • I think IT is a great career because…

11. Speaking strategy

Briefly say what you study and why. List the main subjects, then 2–3 you’re really into. Talk about a concrete project you’ve done. Mention tools you actually use. Finish with your plans after graduation and a current trend in IT (AI, cybersecurity, robotics).
