Food and Eating Out

1. Meals of the day

  • Breakfast (snídaně) – tea/coffee, toast, eggs, cereals, yogurt, fruit.
  • Brunch – late breakfast / early lunch, popular at weekends.
  • Lunch (oběd) – the main meal in CZ; soup + main course.
  • Afternoon snack (svačina) – sandwich, fruit, biscuit.
  • Dinner / supper (večeře) – often lighter in CZ, heavier in southern Europe / USA.

2. Food categories

  • Fruits: apples, pears, oranges, bananas, strawberries, blueberries, grapes.
  • Vegetables: potatoes, carrots, onions, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, broccoli, spinach.
  • Meat: beef, pork, chicken, turkey, lamb, sausages, bacon, ham.
  • Fish & seafood: salmon, trout, tuna, cod, prawns / shrimps, mussels.
  • Dairy: milk, cheese, butter, yogurt, cream.
  • Grains: bread, rice, pasta, oats, cereals.

3. Czech cuisine

  • Soups: bramboračka, kulajda, česnečka, gulášová polévka, hovězí vývar with noodles.
  • Main dishes:
    • Svíčková na smetaně – beef sirloin with cream sauce + dumplings + cranberries.
    • Vepřo-knedlo-zelo – pork with dumplings and cabbage.
    • Guláš with dumplings.
    • Smažený sýr – fried cheese with chips and tartar sauce.
    • Řízek – schnitzel (pork or chicken).
  • Sweets: ovocné knedlíky, koláče, trdelník, palačinky, bábovka.
  • Drinks: Czech beer (Pilsner, Budvar, Staropramen) – world famous; Becherovka, slivovice, Kofola.

4. British food

  • Full English breakfast – bacon, sausages, eggs, beans, mushrooms, tomatoes, toast.
  • Fish and chips – battered fish with chips, vinegar.
  • Sunday roast – beef, Yorkshire pudding, gravy.
  • Sandwiches, pies, shepherd’s pie.
  • Afternoon tea with scones, jam, clotted cream.
  • Pubs – pints of ale, fish & chips, pub food.

5. American food

  • Burgers, hot dogs, pizza, BBQ ribs, fried chicken, mac and cheese, donuts.
  • Pancakes & maple syrup for breakfast.
  • Thanksgiving turkey in November.
  • Fast food chains – McDonald’s, KFC, Burger King, Subway, Starbucks.
  • Diversity: Tex-Mex, soul food, Cajun (New Orleans), Italian-American.

6. International cuisines

  • Italian: pizza, pasta, risotto, lasagna.
  • Asian: Chinese, Japanese (sushi, ramen), Thai (curries), Indian (curry, naan, tikka masala), Vietnamese (pho, bun bo).
  • Mediterranean: Greek (gyros, tzatziki), Spanish (paella, tapas), Turkish (kebab).
  • Mexican: tacos, burritos, quesadillas.

7. Eating out

  • Types of places:
    • Restaurant – proper service, menu.
    • Pub / bistro / café – lighter food, drinks.
    • Fast food – quick and cheap.
    • Canteen – school / work cafeteria.
    • Food truck / street food.
  • Restaurant process:
    • Book a table → choose from the menu → order with the waiter / waitress → eat → ask for the bill / cheque → pay (and tip ~10 % in CZ, 15–20 % in USA).

8. Useful menu vocabulary

  • Starters / appetizers: soup, salad.
  • Main courses / mains: with side dish (chips, fries, rice, mash, salad).
  • Desserts.
  • Specials / today’s menu / set menu.
  • Vegetarian / vegan / gluten-free / lactose-free options.

9. Diets and lifestyles

  • Omnivore – eats everything.
  • Vegetarian – no meat.
  • Vegan – no animal products at all.
  • Pescatarian – fish, no other meat.
  • Gluten-free, lactose-free – for allergies / intolerances.
  • Keto, paleo, intermittent fasting – trendy diets.

10. Healthy vs. unhealthy eating

  • Healthy: lots of vegetables and fruit, whole grains, fish, less sugar / salt, drink water.
  • Unhealthy: fast food, sugary drinks, too much processed food, skipping breakfast.
  • Obesity is a growing problem in Western countries.

11. Useful phrases

  • I’d like… / Can I have…, please?
  • What would you recommend? / What’s the soup of the day?
  • Could we have the bill, please?
  • Keep the change. / I’ll pay by card.
  • I’m allergic to… / I’m vegetarian.
  • This is delicious / a bit cold / too salty.

12. Speaking strategy

Start with meals of the day and your eating habits. List a few Czech dishes you can describe in English. Compare with British / American cuisine. Talk about eating out (restaurant vs. fast food). End with your view on healthy eating and modern diets.
