Free Time

1. When do I have free time?

  • Mostly at weekends and in the evenings after school.
  • During the week I have less time because I have to study, do homework, work on projects.
  • More free time during school holidays (summer, Christmas, Easter, half-terms).

2. How I spend it

  • At home: reading, watching films / series, listening to music, playing computer games, surfing the internet, cooking, chatting with friends online.
  • Outside: going for a walk, cycling, sport, meeting friends in a café, shopping, going to the cinema / concerts.
  • Creative: drawing, photography, playing an instrument, writing, programming.
  • Sport: football, gym, running, swimming, skiing in winter.

3. Hobbies (typical examples)

  • Active: sport, hiking, dancing, gardening, DIY.
  • Creative: painting, sewing, knitting, baking, photography, video editing.
  • Collecting: stamps, coins, comics, vinyl records.
  • Intellectual: reading, chess, learning languages, watching documentaries.
  • Tech: programming, electronics, 3D printing, gaming.

4. Reading

  • I read fiction / non-fiction / fantasy / sci-fi / mystery / biographies / history.
  • Some people prefer magazines, newspapers, blogs to books.
  • I read books in English too to improve my language.

5. Going out

  • Disco / club – music, dancing, meeting people.
  • Pub / café – chatting with friends, having a coffee or a beer.
  • Cinema / theatre / concert – cultural experience.
  • Sports event – stadium atmosphere.

6. Holidays

  • Active holidays: travelling, sightseeing, camping, hiking.
  • Relaxing holidays: cottage, beach, staying at home.
  • Family vs. friends – different vibe; with family more sightseeing, with friends more adventure.
  • Czech tradition – going to chata / chalupa at weekends.

7. Free time across generations

  • Children: play, school clubs, sports.
  • Teenagers: hanging out with friends, social media, sport, gaming.
  • Adults: less free time because of work and family; DIY, gardening, sport.
  • Elderly: gardening, reading, travelling (when retired), grandchildren.

8. Free time alone vs. with others

  • Alone: good for recharging, reading, gaming, deep work.
  • With others: more fun, social bonds, learning from each other.
  • It depends on mood and the activity.

9. If I had more free time

  • I’d travel more, learn another language, read more, get into better shape, finish projects I’ve started, spend more time with family.

10. Free time in Liberec

  • Outdoors: Ještěd (hiking, cable car, skiing in winter), Jizerské hory, biking trails.
  • Indoor: Centrum Babylon (waterpark, lasergame), shopping in Forum / Plaza, cinemas.
  • Sport: Tipsport Arena (ice hockey – Bílí Tygři), swimming pool, gyms.

11. Useful phrases

  • In my free / spare time I like to…
  • I’m really into… / I’m keen on… / I’m mad about…
  • I’m not really into… / I can’t stand…
  • I usually / often / sometimes / rarely / never…

12. Speaking strategy

Start with when you have free time, then 2–3 activities you actually do, plus 1 hobby in detail. Mention something local (Liberec). Finish with what you’d do with more free time – it shows good conditional grammar (If I had…, I would…).
